Possum's Tale
Possum Shortly After he Came from the Shelter
This sad little boy was found by animal services. Sick, frightened, and in terrible condition, he was released to rescue. Little Possum was quite a mess. His back was covered in scabs and sores. He was coughing and weak. When we took him to the veterinarian, we discovered that he is only about 3 years old, but has a grade 5 heart murmur. We believe he is actually not a hairless dog, but it appears that he received a chemical burn which caused the hair to fall out. Because his nails were painted, we think it is possible that someone tried to

color his hair with human hair dye and he was burned by that. His hair will probably never grow back, but his skin is healing up. Possum needs to be carefully monitored because of his heart condition. If he develops a respiratory infection, it is important to get him right to the vet for treatment. Possum will eat well, and has put on weight since he came to rescue. He is much more trusting than when he came. Although he does not like other dogs much, as they frighten him, he is very loving with his family. He will wag
his tail and do a little happy dance when you come over to him. He rests quite a bit, and should not over exert himself with his heart condition. Possum will be available for adoption to a loving home when his rehabilitation is complete. We are all grateful for the assistance of the "Possum Posse" who helped to get this little boy out of the shelter and on his way to rescue and the chance for a life in a home where he will be loved and cared for.

Possum Update
Possum is doing just great. He had a period of time where he was fighting upper respiratory infections, had little appetite, and was losing weight. He was on antibiotics for some time, and we were feeding him a special diet which is very palatable to the dogs and extremely high in nutrition. Possum is now back on regular small dog kibble with water. He still sleeps quite a bit, but prances out of his bed to bark at any dog or puppy who gets too close to him! He runs around the house when we come home, and enjoys going out into the yard on warm days. Possum will do well as an only dog, or perhaps in a home with another small, quiet, older dog. He has had some accidents in the house, but does well if you put him outside on a regular schedule. Our veterinarian has him on prescription herbs for cardiac health, due to his murmur. Possum is adoptable at this time to an approved home. If you would like to inquire about adopting Possum, or any of our Special Stories dogs, or sponsoring a Special Stories Dog, please contact us
